How is a saliva sample taken from a child?

It is important the baby does not eat or drink 45 minutes prior to sampling.

  1. Carefully remove the swab from its holster and preserve the sheath.
  2. Rub gently and turn the swab along the inside of the cheek for 20-30 seconds, ensuring that the entire swab tip is contacted.
  3. Let dry the swab at room temperature for about 30 minutes in a clean place and without contact the end containing the sample with any surface. Finaly, insert it in its sheath.

*** It is very important that the swab is completely dry before storing it in its sheath so that the sample is properly preserved.

*** The sample must be kept at a maximum of room temperature (15 – 30°C).

How should i collect my saliva sample (for adults)?

The instructions for taking a correct saliva sample are included in the kit that you will receive in your home so that you will know what to do on starting the procedure. This procedure is quite simple:

This is a genetic test. Therefore it is not necessary to be fasting or to be totally healthy. It doesn’t matter if you are pregnant or taking medicines. However, you should not eat, drink water, smoke or chew gum for at least 30 minutes before collecting the sample.

The DNA that we extract from the saliva is obtained from the buccal epithelial cells as well as from the white blood cells found there. Since white blood cells can represent up to 70% of the total number of cells processed, we recommend that those persons who have a lower count of white blood cells due to illnesses, medicines, chemotherapy, etc. wait until the count returns to a normal level before taking the test so as to ensure an optimum quantity and quality of DNA to be analyzed.

Although the saliva sample does not need to be refrigerated (there is no need to worry if your sample is in a car or airplane), it is best preserved at a temperature between 15-30º C. However we do recommend that once you have collected your sample you mail it right away so that it arrives at our laboratory as soon as possible. If you cannot reach a post office, consult us before requesting the kit so that we can help.

Remember to put the collection tube in the box and the box in the bag and verify that the shipping label is affixed. As the shipping costs are prepaid, you have only to make sure the box with the tube is in the shipping bag and take it to the post office.

What happens if i want to cancel my order?

If you change your mind after buying the DNA GeoSet kit and decide to cancel the order before we process it, you can request a refund of your money.

In this situation, please contact us to hello@dnageoset.com indicating CANCELATION and the order number on the subject line of the email. You have a limited amount of time to use this option. (Once your order is processed in our warehouse, we cannot cancel the order and you will have to request a refund of your money according to the norms listed in the next section.)

Depending on the number of orders, this could take between 60 minutes to 6 hours. The amount will be refunded by the same method the payment was made.

When was my sample received?

When your sample arrives in our laboratories, you will receive an automatic email notification. Your results will be available within 4-6 weeks from this day.

In some countries, the samples are centralized before being shipped to our laboratories in Europe. Because of this, delivery date of your package and the date of reception in the laboratory can differ.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Everything you need to know to buy safely

Can i do the test from any country?

Yes, we accept international orders from many countries. You can check the list of countries we ship during the buying process.

Can the test be given to a child (or to a baby)?

Of course. In fact, children represent the age group that will most benefit from the Health Map. Since they still have their whole life ahead of them, they will have more opportunities for modifying their environmental factors and their life behaviors by acting on those items highlighted in their Health Map. For children between the ages of 0-3 years, DNA GeoSet commends requesting the DNAGeoSet Kids Kit, especially adapted for children, at the time of purchase. Given that it is harder for them to spit, the children’s test kit includes a special utensil for taking a buccal saliva sample simply and painlessly. If your child is able to spit (for example, if he/she can spit after brushing his/her teeth) then we recommend the adult kit.

Remember that the parent/guardian consent in mandatory in order to test a minor (0-18 years of age). Please read the following information.

— VERY IMPORTANT (parental consent) —

Only parents/legal guardian(s) can purchase a DNA GeoSet kit for a minor. If the parents are divorced or separated but retain joint legal custody, both parents must consent. In the case of sole legal custody of one parent, that parent, guardian, or other person legally responsible for making decisions on the child’s behalf, said person must consent. The necessary documents to verify legal representation of a minor and therefore giving informed consent to contracting a test can be found in the final paragraphs of Section 3.1 “Legal Texts”.

A. If testing is contracted by either of the parents: “In order for the services of DNA GeoSet to be subscribed for a minor, the parent must prove his/her relationship by electronically sending a scanned copy of his/her National Identity Document, a copy of the minor’s National Identity Document, if the minor has one and a copy of the Family Registry Book. If the party/parties concerned do(es) not possess a National Identity Document, a scanned copy of the passport or legal document which accredits the identity of the minor and/or parent should be sent.

B. If testing is contracted by a legal guardian, ” guardianship must be proven by means of the scanned copy of the legal appointment as guardian by the courts, together with a scanned copy of his/her National Identity Document and a copy of the Minor’s National Identity Document (if the minor has one) sent electronically. If the party/parties concerned do(es) not possess a National Identity Document, a scanned copy of the passport or legal document which accredits the identity of the minor and/or guardian should be sent electronically.

What is a health map?

Your Health Map is a document or a guide based on maximum scientific evidence which compiles all of the available genetic information through the system of SNP analysis.

Your Map describes how susceptible you are to contracting different ailments (from oncologic to ophthalmologic, gynecologic, etc.) and provides you with pharmacogenetic information so that you can choose the best treatment for many pathologies and prevent undesirable secondary effects.

Thanks to your map it is also possible for you to know if you are a carrier of any monogenic disease such as cystic fibrosis.

In addition it tells you about the most important traits that make you susceptible to having, for example, a tendency to baldness or obesity; the type of muscle mass for doing sports, or even academic outcomes.

Your map will become your new tool for knowledge about your personal health and prevention of illnesses, your start towards personalized medicine.

What is genetic counseling?

Genetic counseling consists of informing, educating and giving support to a person or family that suffer from genetic diseases or are in risk of suffering them. During the genetic counseling, the doctor explains to the person or family the involved risks, providing diagnostic and of predisposition and proposing means of action. It also provides insight as to risks for future generations and gives advice on possible treatment.

How does DNA GeoSet offer genetic counseling?

For us it is extremely important that you feel accompanied during the whole process by a qualified medical professional. Therefore, on top of the continuous improvements to platform in the means of data updates and graphic and interactive material, we also offer a free medical forum and 1 to 1 consultations with specialized doctors. The medical forum is free with the purchase of your DNA GeoSet kit. It is a forum directed to the whole DNA GeoSet community, both medical professional as to all users with their own Healthmaps. You will be able to consult, ask questions, share experiences or concerns so that other users are able to clarify the information and also so that others can share their opinion and impressions after obtaining their results. 1 to 1 consultations have a small fee of 25€. This service consists of having a private session with one of our doctors to solve your more personal questions. We will clarify any question you might have regarding your results and we will give you guidance as to how to follow the different preventive measures. We will advise you which medication is the best for you and we will give you guidance on family planning, to measure reproductive risk. In essence, we want to be by your side on the perfect comprehension of your results so that your Healtmap becomes an essential tool for the improvement of your health.

Who can benefit from a genetic test and from genetic counseling?

Any person who has knowledge of cancer diagnosis in their family should visit a primary health care doctor to obtain a first assessment. If the doctor considers that there is data that suggest an hereditary disorder, he should forward the patient to a genetic counseling unit for further evaluation. The Healthmap can also be useful for those seeking more information regarding their genetic composition as well as for those wanting to know their predisposition to develop complex or polygenic diseases. If you want to know if your medication or drug is appropriate or if you want to know if you carry any monogenic (hereditary) disease in order to prevent passing it on to your descendants, you can also benefit from the information provided in DNA GeoSet´s Healthmap.

What is genetic predisposition?

Genetic predisposition is the increased probability of suffering an illness, or how genetics influences the phenotype of a person. Although it is always not the case, illnesses can happen as a result of the interaction of a gene with the environment. When the genetic susceptibility of those risk cases is discovered, we can alter our environment to reduce the probability of getting those illnesses.

What is included in the health map?

  1. Your Health Map. More than 300 items of information distributed in 4 categories (susceptibility to diseases, pharmacogenetics, diagnosis of monogenic diseases and phenotypic traits).
  2. After-sales genetic counseling. Each chapter is written in a way that is easily understandable by everyone, with the latest prevention recommendations.
  3. Constant updating of your Health Map. Our more than 555,000 mutations allow us to store this information, interpret it and give new information as new discoveries are made.
  4. Public forum, moderated by medical professionals.
  5. Professional Access. You can authorize your trusted professional to access your Health Map in a simple way and through the online platform. A tool that will help you make more informed decisions about diagnosis and treatment.
  6. Shipping costs included in national territory (Spain).

What is the SNP?

SNP (pronounced ‘snip’) refers to the term Single Nucleotide Polymorphism which is a variation in the DNA sequence that affects a single base (adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T) in the genome sequence. These variations play a role in making us weaker or stronger in response to illnesses or in response to drugs, and as such, are the fundamental basis of our studies and the corner-stone of our Health Map.

What other services does DNA GeoSet offer?

Our mission is to provide you with the knowledge you need for your personal wellbeing and to give you modern tools for disease prevention. To accomplish this, we are setting up a personalized post-purchase service where you can have 1 on 1 private and personal consultations with our team at a very competitive price.

What payment options do I have?

We accept Visa and Master Charge credit cards. Full prepaid payment only. DNA GeoSet is responsible only for those orders made through our website or from our authorized official distributors. If you are not sure that your distributer is authorized, you should contact DNA GeoSet before completing the purchase.

What technology does DNA GeoSet use?

To be able to work with the DNA from the extracted saliva sample, it has to be amplified (multiplied). After this amplification, a genotyping is done.

To do this we have developed a unique microarray chip which contains the largest number of SNPs that, after long years of research, evidence the greatest scientific expression. In other words, we work with those SNPs that the scientific community has approved and is the subject of published papers. Some of the SNPs that we work with have been named in over 200 research articles.

In DNA GeoSet we use the Global Screening Array (V3) de illumina® that contains more than 650.000 markers. In addition, it is customized with more than 10.000 simple nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs that have been previously selected to obtain additional relevant clinical information. The genetic analysis is performed in laboratories with the ISO9001:2015 Certificate, with all the corresponding regulations to offer the highest quality standard, which guarantee the accuracy and reliability of the results.

YOUR HEALTH

All information about the scope of the test results

Are the results confidential?

The results are 100% confidential. When you register your kit, it becomes an encrypted alphanumeric code so that your personal data is not accessible in the laboratory nor during the analysis process. We rigorously adhere to the Privacy Act and have established both physical and software barriers to protect your privacy.

Can you download raw data in DNA GeoSet? Can raw data be used in other websites?

Yes, from the user menu, in the section “listing kits”.

After accessing “actions”, raw data can be downloaded.

Raw data is downloaded in zip format. Once it has been decompressed, it is a csv format that can be used in other websites.

From DNA GeoSet we check each results, and each of the probes interpreted, so we can not be held responsible for the interpretation made by other websites of our raw data.

How does pharmacogenetic information help me?

Pharmacogenetics is the door to personalized medicine. This information will enable you to receive the best treatment for you for a specific illness or type of cancer, will tell you which drugs will cause less secondary effects, or the proper dosage to take of a drug to achieve the a satisfactory response. Undoubtedly this is one of the most important and immediate benefits that you will obtain from having your own Health Map.

How reliable are the results?

With regard to the reliability of the results obtained, it is necessary to analyze from 2 points of view:

  1. Reliability of raw genetic data: In DNA GeoSet we use illumina’s iScan technology with the microarray chip GSA (V3) of 650,000 genetic markers that we also customize with 5000 own probes. The reliability of the illumina’s scanner is 99.99%. 12 probes out of 150,000 fail. In DNA GeoSet we triple the probes and if the same result is not given in all three probes, the information is not displayed.
  2. Reliability of interpretation of genetic data: In DNA GeoSet all the selected information is selected by a team of doctors and geneticists. All the information provided comes from “papers” with statistically significant results. With a p value of less than 0.05,700 cases and 700 controls and published in Impact Journals with clinical validity.
Each of these mutations analyzed comes with its corresponding bibliographical reference.

In short, the highest possible reliability.

How will i see my results?

From the principal page of DNA GeoSet and without having to register, you can see each one of the items about which we provide information. If you click on susceptibility to illness, you will see a brief summary of the illness and a complete guide of prevention for it.

These prevention guides have been drawn up and are continuously updated by our medical team using the latest clinical guides of procedures.

While waiting for your Health Map, if you log into the client area, you will be able to see an example of the type of report you will receive when your Map is completed.

After DNA GeoSet has finished your report, you will have the complete report online in your client account. DNA GeoSet will notify you when it is ready.

In order to access our service you first need to have an Internet connection to request your map and see it online.

Additionally, your registration must specify the age, sex, race and location of the person whose DNA is sampled for the Health Map since those are the parameters that DNA GeoSet introduces in the calculation together with the genotype to give you your personalized information.

The science behind DNA GeoSet

Each one of your cells contains unique genetic material which makes you different from other human beings. This genetic material is similar to an enormous spiral staircase where genetic information such as your risk of a heart attack or your drug response, is contained on some of the steps.

This genetic material is formed by 3000 million base pairs of which 98% are identical to the rest of the human race. Therefore there are 10 million SNP (simple nucleotide mutations) which determine the variations (state of health, differentiating traits, etc.) in different persons.

Thanks to the advances in Medicine, Genetics and Biotechnology we are able to read this change in the nucleotide and put it together with existing studies to offer this valuable information for DNA GeoSet.

In DNA GeoSet we work with more than 900 SNPs that can be found in leading scientific journals such as “Nature, Cell, New England Journal of Medicine”. We work only with those studies that present a minimum of 700 cases and controls, and in which the results are statistically significant with a p value less than 0,005, although the majority of the studies present a quantity of cases and controls much higher and a p value less than 0,001.

These results, do it change over time?

Genetic information is invariable; it remains unaltered from the time of birth. De novo (spontaneous) mutations could occur but this is highly unlikely.

Your Health Map only updates based on your age since the incidence of illnesses changes with age. Your Health Map automatically adjusts modifying your risk and other results as you get older.

However, any new SNPs discovered after you have already obtained your results cannot be updated in your current Health Map; you would need to redo your analysis to gain information relating to the newly discovered SNPS. As the discoveries happen and these items are included in our system, we will inform those clients with older chips when we think they should repeat the testing process. The retesting process will not have the same cost as the initial test and will be offered at a much lower price. (However we wish to point out that the time frame for considering that a retesting necessary is quite long).

Our wish is to put new discoveries in genetics, backed by the scientific community, within your reach. Given the rigorous means that we take to include SNPs, it is improbable that any one of them be refuted.

It is important to highlight that it is our intention to continue adding those SNPs with a better incidence of data, allelic frequencies, etc. to offer you the most up-to-date and precise Health Map possible.

What can i learn from my Health Map?

As doctors we think that genetic data is basic and fundamental information for any human being. DNA GeoSet was founded with the objective of making this information as accessible as possible to the general public.

The information your Health Map will provide you with is so important that we believe everyone should have this opportunity.

An illness originates from the interaction of your genetics with the environment around you. DNA GeoSet takes into account these factors. The information that we give you about your DNA has been tested by the scientific community through SNPs, variations in only one nucleotide that can protect you from or predispose you to certain illnesses. We have taken this valuable information and applied it to your parameters of race, sex, age and geographical location.

We have separated these susceptibilities into 5 categories or labels (cancer, cardiovascular apparatus, digestive apparatus, ophthalmology, neurodegenerative illnesses and psychiatric disorders) to make your Health Map easier for you to understand and for your medical specialists to interpret.

In addition, your Health Map provides pharmacogenic information so that you know which medicines or drugs you metabolize more quickly or more slowly, helping to prevent secondary effects or possible allergic reactions. This will help find the best treatments for you for determined illnesses.

Genetic diagnosis is another item of information that you receive. You will find out if you are a carrier of, for instance, cystic fibrosis or other common* monogenic illnesses. (*The catalogue of monogenic illnesses is much more extensive but they are much less prevalent and occur so rarely that for the moment, they are not included in the Health Map).

Lastly, you will find information about your phenotypical traits: eye color, hair, PSA levels and even muscle endurance and for example, its type of fiber.

But our work does not end once we give you this information; our team of medical professionals will provide you with professional recommendations based on the most important medical guides for the prevention of each illness.

You will also find a free online forum in the Client area of the DNA GeoSet website moderated by medical professionals who will answer your questions or doubts.

Likewise, we are in the process of establishing a system of personalized medical consultations whereby you can get more information relating to the results of your Health Map, illness prevention, etc. either by telephone or by videoconference.

What does “insignificant” mean when it appears on the results report?

The “risk” of you contracting a certain illness is adjusted on the DNA GeoSet Health Map according to the incidence or prevalence of this illness in the population. Therefore, the term “insignificant” is used when the incidence of this illness is less than 0.01. That is, when there is less than 1 case per 10,000 persons, a very low risk.

What does “No data available” mean on the results report?

No data available” on the DNA GeoSet Health Map means that it was not possible to detect the genotype of the given polymorphism. This is not a normal occurrence and could be due to the absence of the probe in the chip (inherent to technology) or to poor DNA quality.

When will my results be available?

The report will be available between 4-6 weeks from the date we receive the sample in our laboratory (see When was my sample received?).

Please be aware that this time interval is only an estimate, as we cannot give an exact date due to the complexity of the process and the characteristics of genetic analysis.

Once the results are ready, you will receive an email notification which will inform you that your Health Map is already available in your DNA GeoSet account.

Who analyses the results?

The saliva sample arrives at our laboratory, a research institution that complies with all of the parameters and quality controls in the scientific healthcare and genetics field.

Once in the laboratory the DNA is extracted and amplified and genotyped.

Following that, the data obtained is loaded into the DNA GeoSet data base where geneticists and bioinformatics professionals and doctors analyze the genetic variants and emit a report.

Why in the section of polygenic diseases, do up and down arrows appear? Why do no concrete data appear?

In DNA GeoSet, by storing more than 650,000 mutations, we are able to update the information provided as new mutations are discovered.

Although it is true that in some diseases, despite the significant mutations we have discovered in the report, we believe that new mutations will be discovered and therefore we do not provide all the information. When they’re discovered, we’ll provide all the numerical data.

The mutations contributed are of great relevance and for that reason they are contributed.
